Scribble Journey is for people looking for a different way to explore their mental health. The app provides a series of step-by-step activities that focus on drawing paired with journaling. Their goal isn’t to create a masterpiece but to dive deeper into emotions and get more in tune with their mental health.

With Scribble Journey, my husband and I were selected to participate in Apple’s Entrepreneur Camp where we collaborated with Apple employees to further enhance our app.

how it works

Research methods

I filtered through psychology websites, art therapy blogs, case studies, and The Art Therapy Sourcebook in order to understand how art making effects the brain and mental health.

Secondary Research

By talking to art therapists, I was able to learn about their experiences with clients, knowledge of the field, and recommendations for art making exercises.

Survey

People in a focus group were led through creative prompts focused on improving self love, increasing feelings of gratitude, and coping with strong emotions.

Focus Groups

I sent out a survey to discover people's destressing methods, participation with creativity, and art making tool preferences.

Structured Interviews

Research Insights

The majority of people prefer physical art making tools, such as paints and markers, over a digital platform.

Physical Mediums

Hemisphere integration is a major goal with creativity - by conducting a written expression after a creative exercise, both sides of the brain will work collectively.

Hemisphere Integration

People are better able to add verbal/written expressions of emotions after a creative exercise in ways that they could not previously have done.

Written Expression

There are stronger feelings of success and relaxation by being instructed on how and what to draw and by drawing concrete forms.

Success

Interpretation

Only the user can interpret their drawings, but asking questions can help them understand their choices.

Expressing emotions through an artistic manner can be freeing and more comfortable than communicating verbally with someone.

Non-Verbal Expression

Choose your intention and find an activity that feels right to you and your emotions.

Complete the drawing steps within the app or grab a pencil and paper for your drawing and take a photo of it later.

Find a quiet space to focus on how you feel and start your chosen activity.

Follow the guided journaling prompts to reflect on what you drew and the emotions it evoked. Add more photos to your entry until it feels complete.

Follow the step-by-step drawing instructions.

View, edit and reflect on your past entries.
